Season Overview

We had planned to start our 41st season with our now-traditional September singing day, with Leslie Olive leading us through Mendelssohn's Elijah, to be performed later in the season. With the continuing fall-out from the coronavirus and the consequent uncertainty about when choral rehearsals and events can resume, this event has been cancelled.

In 2020, it will be exactly 1,000 years since the foundation of the Benedictine Monastery in Bury St Edmunds by King Canute, whose marketing department was clearly way ahead of French Connection's.  In October we were due to join in the millennium celebrations - unfortunately this has now been postponed until May 2021.

A Come & Sing Messiah had been scheduled for November, in St Mary's Church Reigate, with an evening performance complete with professional soloists and orchestra, but prevailing circumstances mean this has too had to be cancelled. Social distancing rules at St Mary's give enough space for the Chorale, but not for an audience! This was to be a carbon-copy of the very first concert performed by the then St Mary's Chorus, later re-named as The English Arts Chorale, in April 1980, with 150 local singers taking part.

Our December concert in Reigate was to have been a performance of Mendelssohn's Elijah, a programme we were hoping to be able to repeat in the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London's South Bank in February. This however has been cancelled by the venue.

In 2021 we have no less than three performances of Dvorak's Stabat Mater planned, in collaboration with the Prague Conservatoire Orchestra - the first in St Bartholomew's Church, Brighton, the second on the following day in St Mary's Church, Reigate, and the third in the orchestra's home city of Prague as part of a mini-tour.

In May, the postponed Bury St Edmunds Abbey Millennium celebrations take place, and we will be taking part in a concert in St Edmundsbury Cathedral, singing Paul Carr's specially-composed Into the Light.

In June we are participating in a fund-raising concert in the Hawth Theatre Crawley, organised by our sponsor KMG Chartered Financial Planners, in aid of St Catherine's Hospice and Cancer Research.

To celebrate 40 years of music-making, in June and July we are performing Thomas Tallis's 40-part motet Spem in Alium, in collaboration with the Ripieno Choir. The two concerts, in Thames Ditton and Reigate, will also include Rachmaninov's Vespers.

Dvorak Stabat Mater

Dvorak's Stabat Mater, Op. 58, is an extended setting for vocal soloists, choir and orchestra of the 20 stanzas of the Stabat Mater sequence. Dvořák started composition in February 1876 as a reaction to the death of his two days old daughter Josefa in August 1875. The work was first performed in 1880, in Prague. In 1882, Leoš Janáček conducted a performance of the work in Brno. The work was performed in London in 1883, and again, in the Royal Albert Hall, in 1884, and thus played a crucial role in Dvořák's international breakthrough as a composer. In the 21st century the Stabat Mater continues to be Dvořák's best known, and most often performed, sacred work

We are joining forces with the Orchestra of the Prague Conservatoire in three performances of Dvorak's  Stabat Mater, in St Bartholomew's Church Brighton, in St Mary's Church Reigate, and in Prague, the orchestra's home city.
