Season Overview

Our Open Singing Day on September 18th, in St Mary's Church, Reigate, is a chance for singers to join us in exploring Mendelssohn's wonderful Elijah, possibly with a view to joining the Chorale in two performances, in October in Reigate and in November in the Queen Elizabeth Hall on London's South Bank (this latter concert to be confirmed).

Our seasonal carol concert this year takes place in St Mary's Church, Reigate, and in April in the same venue we will be performing Dvorak's Stabat Mater, the work which we had planned to take on tour to Prague this year, sadly abandoned due to the pandemic.

In 2020, it was exactly 1,000 years since the foundation of the Benedictine Monastery in Bury St Edmunds by King Canute, whose marketing department was clearly way ahead of French Connection's. In October we were due to join in the millennium celebrations, but the event was postponed and is now scheduled for May 2022. We will be taking part in a concert in St Edmundsbury Cathedral, singing Paul Carr's specially-composed Into the Light. On the previous evening, by candlelight in St Edmundsbury Cathedral, we will be singing selected movements from Rachmaninov's Vespers in a liturgical context.

In another programme postponed because of the Covid-19 virus, we are singing Thomas Tallis' forty-part motet Spem in Alium, a belated celebration of the Chorale's fortieth season. Combined with Rachmaninov's Vespers, we are giving wo performances, with the Ripieno Choir of Thames Ditton, in Thames Ditton in June and Reigate in July.

Our final event of the season, on July 16th, is an Open Singing Day, exploring Ralph Vaughan Williams' A Sea Symphony, which we are planning on perfoming twice in October 2022, Vaughan Williams' 150th anniversary year.
